Since the beginning of recorded history, gold has played a significant role in society. In the ancient world, gold ornaments were used in religious rituals symbolizing power, light and life. Over the centuries it has remained the "noblest of metals," the ultimate currency and the only universally accepted means of exchange.
Throughout history all manner of golden treasures have been seized by conquering nations. These spoils of war were routinely melted down for use in making jewelry, art and religious artifacts within the victor’s own culture as a sign of wealth and prosperity. Other Names for Gold: Oro, Tesoro is an element, meaning it contains gold only and is not a mixture of other elements or substances. Gold is a pure metal, it does not oxidize in air like iron (rust) or copper (tarnish). Furthermore gold is very resistant to acids and is hardly affected by these. In the nature, gold is found as flakes or nuggets in rivers, but also as veins in the bedrock. There is however one acid that will affect gold. This acid is a mixture of 1 part Nitric Acid and 3 parts Hydrochloric Acid. Gold can also under certain circumstances dissolve in Natruim- or Calium cyanide. These chemicals are very dangerous

. Gold is the most malleable and ductile of all metals; a single gram can be beaten into a sheet of one square meter, or an ounce into 300 square feet. Gold leaf can be beaten thin enough to become translucent. The transmitted light appears greenish blue, because gold strongly reflects yellow and red. Mainly, Gold appears to be metallic yellow. Gold, also called golden, is a yellowish-orange color which is a representation of the color of the element gold.
The web color gold (also referred to as orange-yellow) is sometimes referred to as golden in order to distinguish it from the color metallic gold. The use of gold as a color term in traditional usage is more often applied to the color "metallic gold"

There are three colors of Metallic Gold paint for coloring interior or exterior trim that are especially popular in San Francisco to use for trim in or on Victorian houses: Old Gold (a coppery gold color), Rich Gold (a bright metallic golden color), and Bright Gold (a yellowish gold color that looks like the color of brass). These metallic gold colors are sometimes called Byzantine Colors because of their popularity in the Byzantine Empire.
Barrick Gold Corporation (TSX: ABX, NYSE: ABX) is the largest pure gold mining company in the world, with its headquarters in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and four regional business units (RBU's) located in Australia, Africa, North America and South America. Barrick is currently undertaking mining and exploration projects in Papua New Guinea, the United States, Canada, Dominican Republic, Australia, Peru, Chile, Russia, South Africa, Pakistan, Argentina and Tanzania. For 2006, it produced 8.64 million troy ounces of gold at a cash cost of US $282/ounce. As of December 31, 2004 its proven and probable gold mineral reserves stand at 123 million troy ounces.
The troy ounce (ozt) is 480 grains, somewhat heavier than an avoirdupois ounce (437.5 grains). A grain is exactly 64.79891 mg; hence one troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 g, about 10 percent more than the avoirdupois ounce, which is exactly 28.349523125 g. 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams. 1 gram =.03215 troy ounce The troy ounce is traditionally used over the avoirdupois ounce in the pricing of precious metals.
Most gold jewelry isn't made of pure gold.
The amount of gold in a necklace or ring is measured on the karat scale. Pure gold is 24 karats. Bars of gold kept in Fort Knox and elsewhere around the world are considered to be 99.95 percent pure, 24-karat gold.

As metals are added to gold during jewelry making, the gold becomes less fine and the number of karats drops. For example, 12 karat gold contains 50 percent gold and 50 percent alloys by weight. The benefit to owning 24 karat gold jewelry, aside from the purity of the piece, is the lack of alloy materials. While this may appeal to a collector or purist, it is also something that people that suffer from allergic reactions to nickel may consider. Nickel is a commonly used alloy material in gold jewelry and is, quite often, responsible for allergic reactions to metal.

The word karat comes from the carob seed. In ancient Asian bazaars, the seeds were used to balance scales that measured the weight of gold.
